Contractor For Galway races New West Stand Announced

The Chairman Raymond J. Rooney and Galway Race Committee are delighted to announce the awarding of the contract for the construction of the New West Stand at Galway Racecourse to Michael J. McNamara & Co.  The Chairman Raymond J. Rooney on behalf of Galway Race Committee and Mr. Bernard McNamara on behalf of Michael J. McNamara & Co. signed the contracts for this development today.  This signing was presided over by Minister John O Donoghue, Minister for Arts, Sports & Tourism in Buswells Hotel.

Galway Race Committee would like to pay a very special word of thanks to Minister O’Donoghue for his departments funding to Horse Racing Ireland’s Development fund which enabled Galway Racecourse to partake in this development.

The total cost of the development will be €22million and will be grant-aided by Horse Racing Ireland to the tune of €10m and in this regard Galway Race Committee would like to thank Horse Racing Ireland for their continued support over the years.  The work which will include the demolition of the existing West Stand and the construction of a new grandstand facility is scheduled to start after the 2006 Summer Festival Meeting and will be completed in time for the 2007 Festival meeting.

Speaking at the announcement, Galway Race Committee Chairman, Mr. Raymond J. Rooney said “When this project is completed, we will have a state of the art stand over 4 floors. We designed this new stand to cater for our loyal patrons who attends the racecourse year on year and we would like to reward them and maintain their support by providing state of the art facilities for them at no extra cost.  The ground floor and first floor on the new stand has been reserved specifically for our supporters.  These floors without any cost whatsoever to our patrons will supply 700 free seats, bar facilities, snacks area, restaurant area, tote hall and toilet facilities.  The upper floors will house panoramic restaurants built to standards that will rival any supporting developments in the world. ”

Horse Racing Ireland’s Chief Executive Brian Kavanagh said “Galway is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of Irish Racing, consistently recording record attendances and betting turnover.  Horse Racing Ireland is very enthusiastic about this new Grandstand development which will further enhance facilities for the racing public”

Galway Race Committee would like to thank our patrons who have attended the Summer Festival meeting in large numbers over the years and look forward to welcoming them to our Summer Festival Meeting again this year.

The Chairman Raymond J.
