Day 5 of the Galway Races Summer Festival 2020

With seven very competitive races on the card, Friday is always a hugely popular evening race meeting and a great way to kick off the Bank Holiday weekend. The first race starts at 5.10pm with all races generously sponsored by Guinness. Friday also plays host to the elegant and stylish  ‘Friday’s Most Stylish Competition’, sponsored by Athlone Towncentre.

Athlone Towncentre’s Celebrity Judges will seek out a people with a flair for style which reflects the vibrant summer Galway Races Festival meet at this year’s ‘Friday’s Most Stylish’ competition. Taking place on Friday, 2nd August, ‘Friday’s Most Stylish’ sponsored by Athlone Towncentre is expected to be one of the biggest gatherings of race going fashion lovers to date on the fifth day of the festival.   With the competition in its seventh year, contemporary and boutique retailers, such as those housed within Athlone Towncentre, may also be reflected in the outfits worn by racegoers.

Judges for the competition James Patrice, Television Presenter and Marietta Doran, Fashion Stylist & Racing Style Presenter will seek out the best style efforts at Galway Racecourse on the day. Both judges will be joined on the day by Manager of Athlone Towncentre Shirley Delahunt who, together with Marietta, has formed part of the judging panel for the last seven years. The chosen judges have a keen eye for Racing Style due to their involvement with race meetings throughout the country.

This year sees the biggest Prize Fund on offer for the competition yet, as it is in excess of €3000. The lucky winner will leave Galway Racecourse with a €1500 Athlone Towncentre shopping spree, a two night luxury hotel & spa break at Sheraton Athlone Hotel, an Emporio Armani Watch courtesy of Fields The Jeweller and bespoke head piece created by Milliner Suzie Mahony plus racing hat hire for the year.

Talking about his excitement ahead of the competition James says “I’m beyond excited to be judging ‘Friday’s Most Stylish’ this year for Athlone Towncentre – the Galway Races are a social calendar highlight for any gal, and the style is always incredible! For me, it’s all about finding a lady who captures the spirit of a fun and fabulous day at the races. While a fashion forward outfit with sartorial sass is always welcome, I’d like our winner not to take things too seriously – we have to enjoy ourselves! It’s all about having the craic with your pals and feeling comfortable in whatever you’re wearing. This always offers an ultimately effortless aesthetic in my eyes! Of course, I’ll have to scrub up meself – a quick dash around Athlone Towncentre is in order!”

Speaking at the announcement of the judges and competition this year Athlone Towncentre Manager Shirley Delahunt says “we are delighted once again to be involved with the Galway Races. The Friday evening of race week has undoubtedly found its place on the calendars of stylish race goers from far & wide. We have seen a real evolution of style at the races over the last number of years which perfectly complements the 60 high street stores and boutiques we house in Athlone Towncentre. This competition and its previous winners have demonstrated that racing style is now more about reflecting ones’ individual personality and flair for style as opposed to spending an exorbitant amount of money on clothing one cannot wear more than a handful of times. We’re looking forward to the fresh new take on the competition this year where style becomes a character in itself at Galway Racecourse.”

Social Media fans are advised to keep an eye on the Athlone Towncentre Facebook and Instagram accounts as Virgin Media ‘Weekend AM’ Stylist and previous winner of ‘Friday’s Most Stylish’ Rebecca Rose take them over for the day. Rebecca will showcase the style on view at ‘Friday’s Most Stylish’ competition as well as giving viewers exclusive access to what happens behind the scenes on the day.

Talking about Friday’s Festival meet, Michael Moloney, General Manager of Galway Racecourse says “Friday at Galway Racecourse has taken on a life of itself. It’s now a hugely popular day with our racegoers as we head into a Bank Holiday weekend. Our sponsorship with Athlone Towncentre has gone to strength to strength we look forward to working with them again for a very special Festival.”

Athlone Towncentre is home to major fashion brands including Zara, River Island and H&M as well as boutiques. It is an ideal shopping destination with over 60 brands under one roof as well as numerous food offerings catering to all tastes.
